Mexico Cap Perfect Group Stage with Commanding Victory over Ten-Man South Africa
The roar of the Estadio Azteca reached fever pitch on June 11th as host nation Mexico delivered a statement performance, dispatching South Africa 2-0 to close out the group stage with a flawless record. The tone was set inside the opening ten minutes when J. Quiñones pounced early, lashing home in the 9th minute to send the home crowd into raptures. With the altitude of Mexico City and a sea of green in the stands behind them, El Tri looked every bit the team destined to make a deep run on home soil, controlling the tempo and suffocating any South African ambitions before they could take root.
The contest tilted decisively in the second half when South Africa's discipline unraveled. A red card to S. Sithole in the 49th minute reduced Bafana Bafana to ten men, and Mexico wasted little time exploiting the advantage. Talismanic striker Raúl Jiménez doubled the lead in the 67th minute, coolly finishing to seemingly seal the result. South Africa's night went from bad to worse when T. Zwane was dismissed in the 84th minute, leaving them with just nine players. Even Mexico's own César Montes saw red deep in stoppage time (90+2'), a rare blemish on an otherwise dominant display that could carry consequences into the knockout rounds.
The result carries significant implications for Group A. Mexico finish top of the group with a perfect 9 points, sending an emphatic message to the rest of the tournament as they advance in commanding fashion. Despite the defeat, South Africa secured second place with 4 points, doing enough across their three matches to punch their ticket to the knockout stage. There was heartbreak, however, for South Korea (3 pts) and the Czech Republic (1 pt), both of whom bow out of the competition at the group stage. For the hosts, the dream marches on—and the Azteca faithful now dare to believe.
