Portugal vs Congo DR 2026

Portugal Held by Resilient Congo DR in Houston Thriller

Under the roof of Houston's NRG Stadium, Portugal and Congo DR delivered a tense Group K encounter that ended level at 1-1, a result that carried heavy consequences for both sides. Portugal burst from the blocks with electric intent, and it took just six minutes for the breakthrough. João Neves, orchestrating from midfield, ghosted into the box to fire the Portuguese ahead, silencing a partisan crowd and threatening to open the floodgates. For much of the first half, the European heavyweights looked in cruise control, moving the ball with the assurance of a team destined to top the group.

But Congo DR refused to yield. As the interval loomed, Yoane Wissa struck a crucial equalizer in first-half stoppage time — a gut-punch to Portugal that turned momentum on its head. The goal not only stunned the favorites but injected fresh hope into the African side's campaign. The second half became a battle of nerves, with Portugal probing for a winner they could never quite conjure, and Congo DR defending with the desperation of a team fighting for its World Cup life. When the whistle blew, the points were shared, and the shape of Group K was decided.

The implications were stark. Portugal, despite the frustrating stalemate, did enough to finish second on 5 points and secure passage into the knockout rounds — though the manner of the draw will raise questions about their finishing. Congo DR, meanwhile, ended on 4 points, agonizingly short of qualification and cruelly eliminated despite a spirited showing that earned them respect if not reward. With Colombia topping the group on 7 points and winless Uzbekistan bottom on zero, this dramatic draw in Houston proved the defining hinge of Group K — glory for one, heartbreak for the other.
